EIGHTEEN WITH A BULLET YA”LL
SATURDAY / SEPTEMBER 28
THE DRASTICS & MC ZULU
BACKING ROCKSTEADY LEGEND DERRICK HARRIOTT
MAYNE STAGE / CHICAGO
WITH GREEN ROOM ROCKERS / 8pm

Derrick Harriott was one of Jamaica’s original movers and shakers – he has recorded and produced hits in nearly every Jamaican musical style, starting with rhythm & blues in the 50s (Jiving Junors), ska, rock steady, and reggae in the 60s, pioneering dub and lovers rock in the 70s, plus excelling in various roots reggae styles from the 80’s through today. His gorgeous, soaring falsetto and his soulful phrasing drew heavily on American R&B, and he found chart success covering The Delfonics, The Temptations, and The Chi-Lites. On his Crystal Records label he produced hit singles for BIG YOUTH, CHOSEN FEW, DENNIS BROWN, THE ETHIOPIANS, KEITH & TEX, and THE KINGSTONIANS. Harriott’s sophisticated, soul-styled sound captured the imagination of the Jamaican public – his recordings in the rock steady style were superlative and still sound fresh and vibrant today. Don’t miss DERRICK HARRIOTT! One night only! Mayne Stage Saturday Sept 28.

Roots & Culture Events Sunday, Sept 29th: LEGENDS OF SKA documentary screening with film maker Brad Klein hosting a Q&A. “LEGENDS OF SKA” was shot in the spirit of “Buena Vista Social Club”, including interviews interspersed with concert footage, both old and new. Author Heather Augustyn will also present her latest book “Don Drummond: The Genius & Tragedy of The World’s Greatest Trombonist”, plus the ska/reggae poster art of Chema Skandal will be on display.
