Hard Left – We Are Hard Left Interview

12717763_1042646039111155_2271644416577100101_n

Redstar73 Blog: Please can you introduce your band. When was it started? What about your name?
Comrade T: Hard Left was started about 2 years ago. We wanted to form an Oi!/Terrace Glam/Bovver rock sort of thing, and we strongly felt that to intervene in those particular genres it was important to make the politics explicitly left wing; class war on the terraces so to speak. The band is:

Comrade N: drums
Comrade T: guitar and vocals
Comrade D: bass and vocals
Comrade M: vocals

Redstar73 Blog: Last year you have released We Are Hard Left album. How is the feedback for the record?
Comrade T: The reviews have ranged from respectful to enthusiastic, which is about all one can hope for.

Comrade M: It’s so hard in 2015 to get music by unknown bands in front of people, I really couldn’t have imagined a better reception than what we’ve received.

Redstar73 Blog: What other releases have you done so far?
Comrade M: Before the album we released two very limited lathe-cut 7” singles, a proper vinyl single for “Skinheads Home For Christmas” and a split 7” with fellow Bay Area band Bad Daddies.

Redstar73 Blog: How would you describe your sound?
Comrade T: The Who covering Sham 69.
Comrade M: I like that we don’t adhere too closely to any specific flavor of punk — we’ve got ’77 styles in there for sure, but also some Oi (of course) and bit of mod and even a dash of early US hardcore.

Redstar73 Blog: How important is for you the DIY idea and politics?
Comrade M: DIY is pretty much my whole experience of making music and running a record label. To me it’s an ethical imperative, but also a practical one. With making records or doing shows you can’t expect the support of even the most open-minded indie institutions; you must be prepared to do things for yourself, and for your own satisfaction.

Redstar73 Blog: When are you coming to Europe for a tour?
Comrade T: We hope to be doing some German and UK shows this fall.
Comrade M: This is a big dream for me- I’ve never played shows outside the US in any of the bands I’ve been in.

Redstar73 Blog: What are your plans for the future?
Comrade M: We have two new singles coming out, one in April and another later in the spring. We’re also contributing a song to a compilation project, and writing more new songs for a second LP.

Redstar73 Blog: Last words!
Comrade M: This particular historical moment presents great danger — economic, ecological and political — but also great possibility. We don’t have a program or claim to have all the answers ; our goal is to be positive and encourage listeners to study and analyze, and to use their imagination so that we might find solutions that benefit everyone.

Roughneck Riot Interview – Folk Punk

10432472_10152174019471659_7561769009436828223_n
Redstar73 Blog: Please can you introduce your band. When was it started?

Hey! We are Roughneck Riot, a Folk-Punk band from the North of England that started back in 2005 when Ryan (bass) and Matty (vox/mando) were 14/15 years old. Over time we have developed our sound to be the contemporary folk – punk sound that has moved away from traditional folk music.

Redstar73 Blog: How is the scene in Manchester?
We live in a town called Warrington which is between Manchester and Liverpool and very close to Leeds and we all constantly work with people from all over the country so the scene is pretty much spread out across the UK. Its the best scene i can imagine being in, the bands are all incredible, the majority of promoters weve played for really do their best to promote the gigs and look after the bands even with our crappy financial situation at the moment. The actual fans and friends of all the bands are amazing too, we can travel to anywhere in the country and usually find some of our friends. Its like a huge extended family!

Redstar73 Blog: How important is for you the DIY idea and politics?
I dont think its important that all bands write political music. Its an artistic expression of something so it can be anything. It just happens to be something we write about. Punk is the reason why I have the morals and ethics that I have and I think with the DIY punk scene, it goes hand in hand. The scene can only work through mutual aid and respect. Being part of a DIY scene usually means everyone is treated fairly and nobody is exploited for their efforts. Something i expect a lot of the scene wish everybody could experience, and why politics is so present in the scene. Our recent van troubles have highlighted to us how caring and generous of a scene it is if you’re willing to do whatever you can for others.

Redstar73 Blog: What’s up next for the Roughneck Riot, any new releases on the Horizon..?
Our 2015 has been absolutely chaotic so far. Losing our van was a massive punch in the gut, and weve had all sorts of personal issues to cope with so writing has been pretty slow once again, but everything feels like we’re back on track at the moment. Our year is nicely filling out with tour dates, we have our 10 year anniversary gig this weekend and we’re hunting for vans right now. It’ll take more than this to stop us.

Redstar73 Blog: Last words…
Start a band! It’s great!
